The University of Cagliari was founded in 1626. It insituted four main curricula. These were closely related to the Spanish academic tradition: theology, law, medicine and the arts. These curricula remained basically the same for over a century. During the second half of the XVIII century Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy promulgated a series of acts which reformed the University.

In the same period, in 1769 to be precise, the central building of what is the modern-day University was constructed. It is located in the Bastione del Belice. It hosts the Rector’s offices.

Many changes have taken place since the second half of the XVIII century with regard to the type of courses offered, how courses are organized, and where the various University buildings are situated in the town.

At present, the University has ten Faculties.

The Faculties of Economics, of Law and Polical Sciences are located in various buildings along Fra Ignazio street. In the same area, and close to the Roman amphitheatre, may be found the Botanical Gardens (inaugurated in 1866) and a number of Institutes which form part of the Faculties of Medicine and of Pharmacy.

The Faculty of Engineering is in Piazza D’Armi, close to the district known as Sa Duchessa. Here we also find the Faculties of Educational Sciences, of Foreign Languages and Literatures, of Letters and Philosophy, as well the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy. The Interfaculty Library and the student Hall of Residence may also be found in this area.

The Department of Archeology is located in the so called "Cittadella dei Musei" ("the Citadel of the Museums"), which was built during the Seventies .

In the last decade the University of Cagliari developed in the area of Monserrato, where the new scientific pole has been built. In Monserrato’s area there is the faculty of Mathematics, Phisical and Natural Sciences.

The Faculty of Foreign languages and literatures

The Faculty of Foreign languages and literatures was inaugurated in 1994. It is situated in Sa Duchessa. It offers three different first degree curricula: European and extra-European languages, Languages for translation and Languages and communication.

Department of linguistics and stylistics (Dipartimento di Linguistica e Stilistica) ® http://www.unica.it/dip-ling/

The Department of Linguistics and Stylistic was inaugurated in order to promote and coordinate research into linguistics and textual studies.

In the linguistic area research concerns:

  • - theory of phonology and syntax;
  • - the history of linguistics, in particular XVIII and XIX centuries;
  • - the Italian language from a synchronic and diachronic perspective;
  • - lexicography and lexicology of Italian and Sardinian varieties;
  • - sociolinguistics of Sardinia, with a focus on languages for special purposes and low varieties;
  • - second language learning and teaching.

In the field of literature, the Department’s scholars carry out research into:

  • - philology and textual analysis;
  • - poetics and retorics;
  • stylistic;
  • pragmatics.

Great attention is devoted to the analysis of ancient texts in Sardinian, Spanish and Catalan. Some of these texts have been published in critical editions by members of the Department. Literary texts have been investigated in order to explain stylistic and textual construction. In particular, statistical procedures have been used to analyse stylistic patterns of Spanish and French writers.

The Department administration office is located on the 2nd floor of the building of Foreign Language and Literatures.
