9. Morphological typology and language acquisition WOLFGANG U. DRESSLER (Institut für Sprachwissenschaft, Universität Wien) wolfgang.dressler@univie.ac.at The course will start with presenting the aims and the program of the course. After a brief history of research, models of morphological typology will be presented, with emphasis on whole-system typologies and methodology. In dealing with typological properties and criteria, the focus will be on morphology, morphophonology and morphosyntax withexcursions into correlations with syntactic and lexical typology. After an introduction into research on first-language acquisition of morphology I will proceed with alternating typological characterologies of an adult target morphology with its acquisition. Acquisition data will come predominantly from work done within the "Crosslinguistic Project on Pre- and Protomorphology in Language Acquisition". These include Italian, French, Spanish; German, Dutch; Russian, Croatian, Slovene, Polish; Lithuanian; Greek;Finnish, Hungarian; Turkish; Yucateco Maya. Some Georgian, Hebrew and Arabic data might be included. Moreover data from the literature, especially from English will be discussed as well. Finally typological generalisations about first language acquisition will be derived and conclusions which might be valid for second-language acquisition as well, will be drawn. Students who would like to have some other language included or prefer emphasis on certain languages cited above, are kindly requested to inform me via e-mail.
